Aligning the spine can unleash the power of the immune system

Chiropractic helps correct interference in the central and peripheral nervous system that arise from nerve irritation (causing hyper-active nerves) and nerve suppression (causing hypo-active nerves).  Very recently important research has begun to reveal the extremely intimate connection between the nervous system and the immune system.  The significance of this is that interference with normal nerve function (most commonly by spinal misalignment which are called subluxation) can now be shown to have a direct impact on the ability to defend itself from an endless list of disease, illness and infection.

“I have never seen a group other than this chiropractic group to experience a 200% increase over the normal patients… We have never seen such a positive improvement in a group.”
~Ronald Pero, Ph.D., Professor Medicine New York University

There are several ways that the nervous system communicates with the immune system.  First, the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) produce signals (neuropeptides) that directly influence the function of the circulating immune system.  Secondly, stress in the central nervous system indirectly influences the immune system by activating the adrenal glands which release hormones that suppress the immune system including glucocorticoids and catecholamines.  Third, the influence of stress on the hypothalamus in the brain stimulates the HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) axis in the endocrine system causing the release of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), which is intimately associated with communication between the neuroendocrine and immune systems and acts as an immuno-suppressant.

Stress Is An Inside Job

While much of the stress we are conscious of seems to come from the outside world, there’s also another world of internal stress.  This includes noxious and irritable conditions that arise from within us, that we live with every single moment of our lives.  Much of this internal stress escapes our conscious attention.  One of the internal stressors that has the greatest impact on the immune system is the irritation produced by spinal bones that have lost their normal alignment.  This causes irritation directly on the delicate nerves of the body and mimics the same kind of “static irritation” produced when we’re under severe mental, emotional or physical stress.

Uncorrected subluxation produces stressful background noise within the nervous system which not only makes us more susceptible to emotional stress and related disorders, but also to illness due to the ongoing suppression of the immune system.

Chiropractic Can Improves The Immune System

Several studies have shown the positive effect of chiropractic on immune system function.  In one study, Ronald W. Pero, Ph.D., head of cancer research at the University of Lund, Sweden, and Chief of Cancer Prevention Research at the New York University, says that regular chiropractic care is shown to increase the strength of the immune system by 200% – 400%. This can make a huge difference not only for individuals fighting diagnosed cancer, but also for otherwise healthy people trying to prevent it.

In a three-year study of 107 individuals who had been under chiropractic care for over five years, Dr. Pero found that the chiropractic patients had a 3 times greater immune competence than people who had not received chiropractic care.  Compared with people who had cancer or other serious diseases, the chiropractic patients had a 400% greater immune competence. Furthermore, the immune system superiority of the chiropractic patients was not adversely affected by age. Dr. Pero said, “I have never seen a group other than this chiropractic group to experience a 200% increase over the normal patients. This is why it is so dramatically important. We have never seen such a positive improvement in a group.”  The study demonstrated that the immune system cells in your body that eat and destroy viruses, bacteria, parasites and cancer cells, are any-where from three to five times more active in people receiving regular chiropractic care.

In 1991 when Patricia Brennan, Ph.D. and other researchers conducted a study that found improved immune response following chiropractic treatment. The study demonstrated the “phagocytic respiratory burst of polymorphnuclear neutrophils (PMN) and monocytes were enhanced in adults that had been adjusted by chiropractors.”  Once again, the cells that eat up and destroy bad cells in the body are enhanced through chiropractic care.

Current researchers are confirming what chiropractors and chiropractic patients have seen clinically for decades.  Removing pressure from the spine on the spinal cord and brain stem allows the immune system to heal the body naturally.  Any adult or child who suffers with immune system issues would be wise to have their spine checked. chronic ear infection, bladder infections, respiratory infections or other issues involving the immune system should be checked for spinal nerve interference and properly adjusted.

In my own practice I have families that depend on chiropractic to stay well and keep their overall medical costs down.  Certainly prevention is the key to saving your health and your money.  When a person gets adjusted the immune system responds very quickly and the body goes to work right away getting the immune system to work on the problem.  In my practice I’ve typically seen that as a patient is starting to feel ill if they get adjusted right away the illness runs its course and the body recovers very quickly, instead of lingering around for days or weeks.  I also have observed that adults and children who get regular chiropractic care respond much more quickly in this way.
