Why Is The Spinal Column So Important?
My own experience with chiropractic started when I was 4 years old. I was suffering from excruciating painful earaches. The doctors were not helping. One morning I awoke with blood pouring from my left ear. I remember screaming, terrified. A friend of my mother said that she had taken her son with earaches to the chiropractor and they had never since returned. Fortunately my mother took the advise and after we starting with chiropractic care I never had another earache.
How can this be? How can correcting the spine affect something like your ears?
The spine is the core of the nervous system. Everything in your body – your heart, immune system, digestion, breathing, emotions and more – depend on the uninterrupted flow of nerve impulses between the brain and body. Many common diseases and health problems that seem completely unrelated to the spine begin with a component of misalignment that chokes nerves in the spinal column. Nerve interference from spinal misalignment is one of the most important, most common and most neglected causes of poor health and illness in adults and children.

Choked Nerves Lead To Degeneration And Illness
What if you stopped brushing your teeth. Stopped getting regular hygiene. How would your teeth and gums be in 3 months? In 6 months? Very soon your gums would become diseased and decay would begin to penetrate the hard enamel of your teeth. Decay that penetrates solid bone. Most of this damage would occur silently, painlessly, until the damage was done. Beyond the teeth and gums, what would the more far reaching effects be on your health?
The bones, nerves, ligaments, muscles and cartilage that make up your spine are even more susceptible to degeneration. The nerves that control everything that happens in your body run through the tight spaces between the spinal bones. This means that even a small misalignment can alter nerve function and create a problem. Sadly, we often ignore our spine unless it starts to hurt. And then many people only treat the pain with medication.
Misalignment in the spine – what’s called subluxation – can result in permanent cartilage damage in as little as 2 to 4 weeks. Nerve pressure equivalent to the weight of a nickel can reduce nerve transmission by 60%. Like many health problems subluxations do most of their damage silently. In time you may find you are experiencing a problem which you didn’t realize originated from a poorly aligned spine.
Nerve interference from subluxation can start with small clues like aches & pains, numbness, tingling, fatigue, general poor health, frequent illness, headaches, indigestion, cramps, constipation or poor sleep to name a few. These are clues to disturbances that are affecting the nervous system in a negative way.
Your Body Needs Care
Chiropractic is not “alternative” health care because there is no alternative to a properly adjusted spine. It’s basic to your health along with exercise, dental care and good diet. Exercise, acupuncture, massage and dietary factors may all play a role in your overall health, but none of these will correct subluxations. The only way to correct subluxation is with a specific, properly performed adjustment. Subluxations occur in everyone regardless of your fitness, flexibility or overall health.
Based our best clinical information and by my own 25 years of experience, a weekly spinal check and adjustment is best. Next best would be a every two weeks. Minimally everyone should get adjusted once a month, but depending on your age, current condition and individual history you may need more in order to prevent irreversible damage.
